Pharm giant Pfizer agreed this week to remove the breast and colon health claims from Centrum vitamin bottles after consumer advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) accused them of false advertising.
Centrum Ultra Women's and Centrum Silver Women's supplement labels contained the claim that the vitamins support "breast health" and that Centrum Ultra Men's and Centrum Silver Ultra Men's support "colon health."
Pfizer made these claims owing to the presence of vitamin D in the supplements, however, as CSPI noted, there is no definitive proof that vitamin D does so.
"Those claims of breast and colon health implied that the supplements would prevent breast and colon cancer - disease prevention claims that supplement manufacturers can't legally make," CSPI said in a press release, adding the labels could make patients think they didn't need to take traditional medication for their illnesses.
Pfizer said in a statement it disagrees with CSPI, but agreed to make the required changes.
