At Least 10 Killed In Egypt Building Collapse

At least ten people have been killed after a multi-storyed building collapsed in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, authorities confirmed Sunday.

The newly constructed 11-storey building in Alexandria's al-Gomrouk neighborhood had collapsed late Saturday, with its debris pulling down three adjoining buildings as well.

Egypt's Health Ministry said late Sunday that ten bodies have been recovered from the rubble so far. It added that some five people have been pulled out of the rubble alive by rescue workers.

Local residents say the construction of the buildings involved were of poor quality. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Such building collapses due to poor construction are common in Egypt, particularly in Alexandria. At least 12 people were killed in the city in 2008 when a building collapsed. Prior to that incident, a similar building collapse had left at lest 33 people dead in the city in 2007.
