U.K. annual inflation eased unexpectedly in June to reach the lowest level since November 2009, data from the Office for National Statistics showed Tuesday.
Consumer price inflation fell to 2.4 percent in June from 2.8 percent in May. Economists expected the rate to remain unchanged at the May level. Despite falling fir a third month in a row, the headline rate stayed above the central bank's 2 percent target.
Month-on-month, the consumer price index fell 0.4 percent in June following a 0.1 percent drop in the previous month. The index was expected to fall 0.1 percent in June.
Retail price inflation eased to 2.8 percent in June from May's 3.1 percent. The annual rate is the lowest since December 2009.
