Maruti Announces Indefinite Lockout At Manesar Plant

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. declared a lockout on Saturday at the violence-hit Manesar plant, stating it cannot risk life and safety of its employees. The shutdown threat comes in wake of the brutal killing of a senior human resources manager, Awanish Kumar Dev, and injuries to several others in a sudden rampage by about 3000 workers at Maruti Suzuki Manesar plant on July 18.

The Manesar plant produces 1,700 units of Swift, Dzire, A-Star among other models every day. In terms of value, per day loss is 70 crore Rupees.

The carmaker's chairman, RC Bhargava said the MSI management has requested the Haryana Government to expedite the inquiry into the incident. "But we cannot say how long it is going to take, so you may say there will be indefinite lockout," he added.

"There is no possibility of removing the plant from Manesar. Such reports are absolutely fictitious," the chairman noted.

There are speculations that Suzuki may establish Gujarat as their exports hub by 2015. In June 2012, the Gujarat government had allocated around 700 acres for Maruti's proposed plant near Mehsana. Maruti had said it would invest 4,000 crore Rupees to set up the new manufacturing facility in Gujarat by 2015-16.
