Hungary May Retail Sales Decline More Than Expected

Hungary's retail sales dropped for a second straight month in May and at a faster-than-expected rate, data released by the Central Statistical Office showed Tuesday.

Retail sales volume fell a calendar-adjusted 2.5 percent year-on-year, following a 2.8 percent decline in April. Economists had forecast only a 2 percent drop.

A fall in the sales of petrol stations as well as furniture and electrical goods shops was the main contributor to the latest decline, the agency said.

Month-on-month, retail sales declined a calendar-seasonally adjusted 0.1 percent in May, after falling 1 percent in April.
