Japan's housing starts declined unexpectedly in June, marking the first fall in five months, data published by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism showed Tuesday.
Housing starts declined 0.2 percent year-on-year in June following a 9.3 percent rise in May. Economists had forecast a 9.4 percent increase.
In June, annualized housing starts totaled 837,000, down from May's three-month high of 903,000.
Meanwhile, construction orders received by big 50 contractors jumped 4.6 percent annually in June, recovering from a 0.9 percent fall in the previous month.
