Pro-labor groups teamed up Monday to attack congressional Republicans, accusing the GOP of "tipping the scales" to protect the wealthy at the expense of the middle class.
Americans United for Change, a liberal non-profit group, paid for the $280,000 ad along with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees labor union.
The TV ad says, "Why are the Republicans trying to tip the scales even more for the big corporations and the richest two percent? The Republicans just voted to give people like Donald Trump a tax break worth $150,000 a year while raising taxes on 25 million working families."
The ads are targeted at Republicans facing a close election, including Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., and Reps. Steve King, R-Iowa, Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., Jim Renacci, R-Ohio, and Dan Lungren, R-Calif.
President Barack Obama has made tax cuts a centerpiece of his re-election campaign, proposing to allow the high-income tax cuts enacted by President George W. Bush to expire.
Obama has said he wants to end those cuts while continuing the tax cuts for families that earn less than $250,000. Senate Democrats approved that idea, but it has stalled in the Republican-controlled House.
GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney has continued to toe the Republican line, arguing that Obama's idea is akin to a tax increase and that businesses and jobs will suffer under such a proposal.
