Romania January Inflation Exceeds Forecast

Romania's annual inflation exceeded economists' expectations in January, data released by the National Institute of Statistics showed Tuesday.

Inflation as per the consumer price index came in at 5.97 percent in January, higher than 5.4 percent economists had forecast.

Food prices climbed 7.19 percent annually during the month, while prices of non-food products rose 6.19 percent. Costs of services were higher by 3.1 percent in January compared to last year.

On a monthly basis, the consumer price index moved up 1.34 percent in January, while economists expected a slower growth of 0.8 percent.
