Nestle is voluntarily removing two chilled pasta products made using beef - Buitoni Beef Ravioli and Beef Tortellini, from sale in Italy and Spain after traces of horse DNA were found in them.
The levels of horse DNA detected were above the 1 percent threshold, Nestle announced Tuesday.
The company noted that Lasagnes à la Bolognaise Gourmandes, a frozen meat product for catering businesses produced in France will also be withdrawn.
The beef to produce the products was supplied by a German firm, H.J. Schypke, a subcontractor of one of Nestle's suppliers, JBS Toledo N.V.
Nestle in a statement said, "We are also enhancing our existing comprehensive quality assurance programme by adding new tests on beef for horse DNA prior to production in Europe."
