Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday that there was a "finite" timetable for talks between Iran and other world powers to reach an agreement in its dispute over its nuclear program.
ABC News reported that in his first overseas trip as President Barack Obama's secretary of state, Kerry said that Iran having a nuclear weapon may "spur a nuclear arms race" in the region and could be used to support terrorist groups.
"If they keep pushing the limits and not coming with a serious set of proposals or prepared to actually resolve this, obviously the risks get higher and confrontation becomes more possible," Kerry said.
The secretary of state gave no inclination on when the timetable for the nuclear weapon agreement needed to be met before Washington would stop negotiating.
Israel is convinced that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons, and has threatened to strike preemptively if the diplomatic talks are unsuccessfull.
