The trade surplus decreased to EUR317.9 million in January from EUR356.7 million in the same month last year. Economists had forecast the balance to rise to EUR387 million.
Export of goods increased 4.3 percent annually to EUR6.46 billion during the month. At the same time, the value of imports advanced 5.2 percent year-on-year to EUR6.15 billion.
The share of European Union (EU) member states was 78 percent in exports and 66 percent in imports in January, the agency said.
