Broadcom Corp. (BRCM), a provider of semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, and NTT Electronics, a supplier of 100G coherent Digital Signal Processor solutions, Tuesday announced a joint collaboration to deliver a low-power digital signal processor or DSP to be used in next-generation 100G-and-beyond optical fiber communication systems.
The current generation 100G DSP will be further enhanced by the new device with additional features such as an integrated digital-to-analog converter, multiple modes of operation and lower power operation. These features are intended to ease bandwidth shortages in long-haul core and metropolitan networks caused by increasing traffic and data demands.
The next generation DSP will use an advanced CMOS process technology that will reduce power consumption by more than 50 percent.
It will utilize flexible modes of operation to provide sub-20W power consumption for operation in long-haul applications, while further reducing power consumption for metro applications.
The lower power dissipation will allow use of this DSP within smaller second generation coherent 100G modules, including a family of C form-factor pluggable modules.
