China and the United States have "enormous shared interests", Chinese President Xi Jinping told U.S Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, who is currently on a visit to Beijing.
"In the China-U.S. relationship we have enormous shared interests, but of course unavoidably we have some difference," Xi said.
The agenda for the talks, at Xi's first major meeting with a foreign official after taking office, primarily include cyber hacking, market access and the Chinese currency.
The main focus of the talks has been the importance of the relationship between Beijing and Washington, and the officials avoided discussing controversial matters.
While hailing the successful bilateral relations between the two countries over the past three decades, Xi said China is committed to work closely with the U.S. to advance cooperative partnership. The peoples of China and the U.S. will benefit immensely if the two sides treat the ties with long-term perspective and from a strategic point of view, he said.
Lew urged China to increase domestic demand to help in global re-balancing, and stressed on the responsibility of the countries to promote global growth. He said both the U.S. and China need to enhance cooperation on resolving the economic and strategic problems facing the countries, while also managing their differences.
The Treasury chief urged China and the U.S. to remove barriers to trade and investment, but avoided referring to China's undervalued currency. There have been complaints of both the governments imposing restrictions on investment in certain sectors.
