Many parents from a Massachusetts middle school are unhappy with the principal's decision to cancel a traditional award ceremony.
Mixed emotions stirred among parents regarding the cancellation of Honors Night over concerns of how it will affect their children. In place of Honors Night, students will get their awards at the end of the year during an annual ceremony.
Last week, the principal of Ipswich Middle School sent a note that said Honors Night was going to be canceled, My Fox Boston reported. In the letter he said: "The Honors Night, which can be a great sense of pride for the recipients' families, can also be devastating to a child who has worked extremely hard in a difficult class but who, despite growth, has not been able to maintain a high grade point average."
One parent said, "I think it's important though, these kids are working hard and that they get these - that they deserve their honors. But I think it should be in an assembly and not in like a special night."
The principal sent out a second letter to parents explaining why Honors Night was canceled. He said "he just wants everyone to participate," WHDH 7 News reported.
