Oracle Unveils New SPARC T5 Servers, Claimed As Worlds Fastest

Enterprise software provider Oracle Corp. (ORCL) unveiled Tuesday its new family of mid-range single-chip architecture SPARC servers based on the SPARC T5 microprocessors, which it claims as the worlds fastest. The new servers, which builds on SPARC T4 momentum and expands the SPARC family, will also run on Oracle's Solaris operating system.

SPARC's legacy dates back to 1987, when Sun Microsystems, now Oracle, developed a new microprocessor that was called Scalable Processor ARChitecture or SPARC. The platform is celebrating its 25th year. Oracle said the new SPARC T5 processor has set 17 world records in industry-standard benchmarking.

"Oracle has refreshed its SPARC family with the world's fastest processor and launched the world's fastest single server for Database, Java and multi-tier applications. The new SPARC T5 and M5 systems leapfrog the competition with up to 10x the performance of the previous generation, offering an unbeatable value for midrange and high-end enterprise computing," said John Fowler, executive vice president, Systems.

The company noted that the new servers will have the computing power to deliver extreme performance and value for database and enterprise applications. It will also trump offerings from rivals IBM Corp. (IBM) and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) in the competition on multiple business-critical workloads.

The company added that traditional systems do not have the horsepower to handle these demanding tasks.

Redwood City, California-based Oracle noted that its SPARC T5 mid-range servers and M5 high-end servers join its entry-level T4 servers to complete its new SPARC family, spanning entry-level, midrange and high-end.

The addition of server families will enable near linear scalability from 1 to 32 sockets, with one common core, one operating system, and one common set of systems management and virtualization tools, making them ideal platforms for building clouds.

ORCL closed Tuesday's regular trading session at $31.54, up $0.28 or 0.91% on a volume of 29.42 million shares.
