Hungary Q4 Current Account Surplus Drops More Than Expected

Hungary's current account surplus decreased more than economists expected in the fourth quarter, owing mainly to a marked deterioration in the trade balance, data released by the central bank showed Thursday.

The current account surplus declined to EUR242 million at the end of 2012 from EUR843 million in the third quarter. The balance was forecast to fall to EUR268 million.

The trade account showed a surplus of EUR1.376 billion, lower than the EUR2.325 billion surplus seen in the three months ended September. The surplus in the current transfers account, meanwhile, rose to EUR541 million from EUR84 million.

Income account showed a deficit of EUR1.675 billion, wider than the third quarter's EUR1.567 billion shortfall, data showed.
