The Detroit Tigers and Justin Verlander have reached an agreement on a new contract that could exceed $202 million if he plays through the life of it, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney Friday.
Detroit's ace received a seven-year, $180 million deal with a vesting option for an eighth that could push the deal over $200 million.
Verlander hinted at a possible deal just with his expression and happiness on twitter earlier in the day.
"Today is going to be a great day. Big news coming," he said. He also added "I love this city & the fans - couldn't be more excited to spend my career here! We're going to bring a World Series to Detroit!!!"
Verlander, who would have been eligible to become a free agent after the 2014 season, recently said in reports during the offseason that he wouldn't discuss a new contract until the end of the season if it didn't get done by the end of spring training.
The 30-year-old has been one of the more dominant pitchers over the last few years. He won the MVP, CY Young and pitcher's triple-crown awards in 2011 with a 24-5 mark, a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts. He won 17 games, with a 2.64 ERA and again led the league in strikeouts with 239.
