Panera Bread Co. (PNRA) Tuesday reported first-quarter net income of $48.1 million, or $1.64 per share, compared to $41.2 million, or $1.40 per share in the comparable quarter last year.
On average, 27 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to earn $1.65 per share for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
Meanwhile, total revenues for the quarter grew 13 percent to $561.78 million from $498.58 million in the prior year, while analysts estimated revenues of $566.30 million for the quarter.
Looking forward to the second-quarter of 2013 the company expects to report earnings in a range of $1.74 per share to $1.78 per share. Analysts currently estimate earnings of $1.78 per share for the second quarter.
Also, the company said it is maintaining its full year fiscal 2013 earnings per share growth rate of 17% to 19%.
