Waste Management Inc.'s (WM) first-quarter net income attributable to the company declined to $168 million, or $0.36 per share, from the year-ago period's $171 million, or $0.37 per share. The latest results included nearly $18 million of after-tax costs from a combination of restructuring charges and impairments of investments in unconsolidated entities.
Excluding these items, net income would have been $186 million, or $0.40 per share, the company said. On average, 9 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected earnings per share of $0.41 for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude one-time items.
Operating revenues for the first quarter of 2013 were $3.34 billion, up 1.2% compared with $3.30 billion for the same 2012 period. Analysts estimated revenues of $3.36 billion for the quarter.
