LG Pre-orders On For 55-inch Curved OLED TVs In Korea

South Korean electronics giant, LG, is now gearing up to launch a curved 55-inch OLED TV. The company has now opened up pre-orders in its home country for a price of $13,500 per unit. Unfortunately, there has been no word on pricing and availability of the device in international markets.

Coming from the company that was the first to launch an OLED TV, the new television set aims at delivering a viewing experience similar to the ones seen in IMAX theaters around the world. They also added that the screen's unique design makes all points "equidistant from the viewer's eyes, eliminating the problem of screen-edge visual distortion and loss of detail."

OLED technology is based on based materials that work by converting electricity into particles of light. While LCD screens need a backlight to illuminate their crystals, OLED technology does not require a separate light source.

Despite being a 55-inch monster, the device flaunts an alluring 4.3mm-thin side profile and keeps things light by weighing just 17kg. It also boasts of a set of "thin-transparent film speakers" which have been integrated into panel's stand to stay consistent with the device's overall design. The company's promo shots have three of these new curved TV sets lined up so that you can make that big screen even bigger.

At the moment, even Samsung is prepping up its own line of OLED TVs, which it showcased at CES in January. However, both the South Korean electronic titans are currently in a dispute alleged thefts of technology.

Experts believe that 4K LCD TVs, which deliver four times as many pixels as a standard 1080p display, will overtake sales of OLED TVs in the coming years simple because of the sheer amount of video quality that they promise to deliver.
