MetLife Inc. (MET) Wednesday reported first-quarter net income of $956 million or $0.87 per share, compared to a loss of $174 million or $0.16 per share last year.
Operating earnings for the quarter rose to $1.64 billion or $1.48 per share from $1.46 billion or $1.37 per share last year. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report earnings of $1.30 per share for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
Total operating revenues for the quarter grew to $16.98 billion from $16.65 billion last year. Analysts estimated revenues of $17.32 billion for the quarter.
