Worker Faces Charges After Hacking Employer's Network

A former software programmer is being charged with computer hacking in federal court, the New York Times is reporting.

Michael Meneses, of Smithtown, N.Y., is accused of hacking into the computer system of his former employer Spellman High Voltage Electronics Corporation.

Federal prosecutors said that Meneses used stolen passwords to hack Spellman's servers and caused the company more than $90,000 in damages.

Meneses, who had been unhappy about being passed over for promotions, hacked the system after he resigned from his job at the company.

"The defendant engaged in a 21st-century campaign of cyber-vandalism and high-tech revenge," Loretta E. Lynch, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District, said.

Meneses is accused of changing the company's business calendar by a month and upsetting production and finance operations, among others.

Applicants for Meneses' former position where redirected to messages from him saying to "don't accept any position" at the company.

Meneses was released on $50,000 bond and could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
