Mexican Consumer Sentiment Improves In April

Mexico's consumer confidence improved modestly in April, after weakening in the previous month, data released by statistical office INEGI showed Monday.

The consumer confidence index moved up to 95.7 in April from 95.4 in March. A month earlier, the reading was 95.5.

The upturn was supported by more optimistic assessment of appropriateness of the current time to make major purchases. The index rose notably to 80.8 from 75.2 in March. Meanwhile, all other components signaled deterioration in sentiment.

Households were slightly less upbeat about their financial situation in April compared to twelve months earlier, with the corresponding indicator declining to 96.3 from 96.5 in the previous month. The expectations sub-index of personal finances, however, dropped sharply to 102.5 from 105.1.

Consumers' perception of the current general economic situation turned gloomy during the month. The corresponding sub-index fell to 95.8 from 96.8 in March.

Mexican households were slightly less optimistic about prospects for the economy in the next 12-month period, with the relevant index dropping to 103.2 in April from 103.4 in the previous month, data showed.
