Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is set to lead the country again after unofficial results placed his party in a comfortable position against his political rivals, according to the several media reports on Sunday. But, no official results have yet been released.
The unofficial partial results suggested that Sharif's party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz or PML-N, was ahead in more than 120 of the 272 directly elected parliamentary seats. While Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf or PTI and President Asif Ali Zardari's Pakistan People's Party or PPP were lagging far behind with 34 and 32 seats, respectively.
The four out of the 272 seats open for public contesting remained uncontested due to death of candidates and law and order situation.
The election should lead to the country's first transition from one elected government to another.
Nawaz Sharif, who won two seats in the May 11 elections, has served as the country's Prime Minister for two non-consecutive terms from November 1990 to July 1993 and from February 1997 to October 1999. However, his both governments were dismissed before completing constitutional term.
Former military ruler, Pervez Musharraf, had last dismissed his government in 1999, and sent him into exile to Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, at least 32 people were killed and 224 others injured in a number of attacks and violence incidents across Pakistan during the general election day on Saturday, the reports said.
