Hong Kong's government was forced to re-write the city's marriage laws after a transsexual woman won a groundbreaking appeal, Reuters reports.
The woman, identified as "W" in the Court of Final Appeal, won the right to legally marry her boyfriend. Originally born as a male, she underwent sex-realignment surgery over five years ago.
The marriage registrar had refused her to wed due to her birth certificate, which cannot be changed under Hong Kong law.
Transsexuals are allowed to marry in China, but same-sex marriages were not allowed in Hong Kong.
