Austrian Inflation Slows To 29-Month Low

Austria's consumer price inflation weakened to the lowest level in twenty-nine months in April, data released by Statistics Austria showed Thursday.

Inflation as per the consumer price index dropped to 1.9 percent in April from 2.3 percent in March. The inflation rate was the lowest since November 2010.

The slowdown was primarily attributable to strong subsidies for fuel. It also reflected a slower growth in housing costs and utility prices, which eased to 2.5 percent from 2.7 percent, and decreases of 0.9 percent and 1.2 percent respectively in costs of clothing and footwear; and transportation.

Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased at a faster rate of 3.8 percent annually in April than 2.6 percent in March.

On a monthly basis, the consumer price index stayed unchanged in April, the agency said.

At the same time, the harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP), measured under the EU methodology, decelerated to 2.1 percent in April from 2.4 percent a month earlier. Month-on-month, the HICP stayed unchanged.
