South Africa's wholesales sales decreased at a faster rate in March, data released by Statistics South Africa showed Thursday.
Wholesale sales, at constant prices, fell a seasonally adjusted 5.8 percent in March, notably faster than the 2.1 percent fall seen in February. In January sales recorded a 3.5 percent fall.
The sharp fall in sales reflects seasonal variations due to the timing of Easter this year, which was spread over the end of March and the beginning of April, the agency said.
Year-on-year, unadjusted wholesale sales dropped 0.7 percent in March, reversing the previous month's 2.2 percent increase. In the three months ended March, sales contracted 1.2 percent from the preceding three-month period, data showed.
