Administrators at a school in Michigan are not allowing two of their students to use yearbook pictures that reveal their pregnancies.
Local television station WOOD-TV reports that the two White Cloud High School students, junior Deonna Harris and senior Kimberly Haney, feel that school officials are being discriminating against them.
Administrators want Harris to re-take her photo, because in her current picture she is visibly pregnant. The picture is a full-body shot of her and a few friends in a truck outside of school.
"It's not like I was holding my belly. I wasn't promoting it in any way. It's just a full body picture," Harris said.
White Cloud Public Schools Superintendent Barry Seabrook said he thinks letting the girls' portraits appear in the yearbook would violate Michigan's mandate that sex education in schools must be abstinence-based, the Huffington Post reports.
"We do have an abstinence program, and the goal is to educate students about abstinence," said Angela Minicuci, public information officer for the Michigan Department of Community Health. "We also have a teen pregnancy program that works closely with communities to make sure teens who are pregnant can have access to proper care."
The two girls have refused to have their photos retaken, meaning that for the time being, they will not have pictures in the yearbook.
