Washington, D.C. To Consider Decriminalizing Marijuana

Certain members of the D.C. City Council are preparing to introduce new legislation that would decriminalize marijuana.

The Washington Post reports that Ward 8 councilmember Marion Barry and Ward 6 councilmember Tommy Wells are devising a proposal that would reduce criminal penalties for those caught with possessing small amounts of marijuana.

"Absolutely, it's time we look at decriminalization of marijuana in the District of Columbia," Wells said. "It's time we enter the 21st century and stop criminalizing people ... for what is not really a major crime." Wells is planning on running for mayor in the next election.

Wells and Barry plan on introducing the bill this summer and hope to have the issue settled before opposes try and petition it on the next ballot.
