Brain Stimulation Could Improve Math Skills

Applying stimulation to the brain could help improve math performance, according to a new study from researchers at Oxford University. For the study, the researchers enlisted 51 Oxford students, half of whom received the high-frequency electrical noise stimulation.

The non-invasive treatment involved placing sensors on the subject's scalp. These electrodes would then send the sound waves through the cranium. Both groups of students were then asked to complete a series of mathematical problems and commit them to memory.

They found that student who received the brain stimulation performed better on the tests for as long as six months after the treatment. Thus far they are not positive as to the reason, but suspect the sensors increase the efficiency with which oxygen travels to the brain.
