Apple devices running on iOS 6 operating system has been officially approved by the US Department of Defense for use on its military networks.
In a statement released, the Defense Information Systems Agency said the security technical implementation guide (STIG) for mobile devices using Apple's iOS6 operating system has been approved.
The approval of STIG allows the military departments to use government-issued iOS6 mobile devices, including iPhones and iPads, to connect to Defense Department networks. The approval does not mean or results in product orders.
The approval for Apple devices comes just two weeks after DoD approved BlackBerry 10 smartphones, BlackBerry PlayBook tablets running BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, and Android powered Samsung Galaxy devices.
According to the Defense Department, it has more than 600,000 mobile devices in operational and pilot use, including about 470,000 BlackBerrys, 41,000 Apple products and 8,700 devices running on Google's Android mobile platform.
