Pound Slides After UK CPI, PPI Data

U.K. consumer price index rose 0.2 percent on month and 2.4 percent on year, compared to expectations of an increase of 0.4 percent and 2.6 percent, respectively. In March, CPI rose 0.3 percent on month and 2.8 percent on year. Core CPI rose 2 percent in April, versus expectation of 2.3 percent and slower-than the 2.4 percent increase in March.

Producer price index rose 1.1 percent in April, slower-than last month's 2 percent increase. Economists had expected output prices of 1.4 percent.

The British currency edged lower against its major rivals after the report. As of 4:34 am ET, the sterling was trading at 1.47 against the Swiss franc, 0.8466 against the euro, 156.16 against the yen and 1.5188 against the US dollar.
