Four Killed In Russia Car Bomb Attacks

Four people were killed and around 40 wounded in twin car bomb blasts in the Russian republic of Dagestan on Monday, the Russian Health Ministry said.

The blasts in two cars laden with explosives occurred some 15 minutes apart in the Dagestan capital Makhachkala. The first blast caused no deaths, but the second occurred after security forces began examining the scene of the first explosion. Police believe that the bombs could have been triggered remotely.

Doctors, psychologists and medical equipment were sent to the city from Moscow by a military aircraft, the RIA novosti news agency reported.

An Islamist insurgency, once confined largely to the Russian republic of Chechnya, has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years. Attacks on security forces, police and civilians are reported regularly in the neighboring republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria, the report said.
