The Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke begins his testimony before the Joint Economic Committee of Congress at 10:00 am ET.
The National Association of Realtors data showed the existing home sales rose 0.6 percent on month in April following a 0.6 percent drop in March. Economists expected existing home sales to rise to 1.4 percent in the month.
The US dollar edged lower against its major counterparts following the data and amid the congressional testimony. As of 10:05 am ET, the greenback was trading at 1.2968 against the euro, 1.5120 against the pound, 0.9703 against the Swiss franc and 102.90 against the yen.
