Hungary April Jobless Rate Drops More Than Expected

Hungary's unemployment rate decreased more than economists expected in the February-April period, latest data showed Wednesday.

The unemployment rate decreased to 11 percent at the end of the three months ended April from 11.8 percent in the January-March period, the Central Statistical Office said. Economists had forecast the jobless rate to ease to 11.6 percent. A year earlier, the unemployment rate was 11.5 percent.

The unemployment rate among youth, aged between 15 and 24, dropped to 27.5 percent from 30.5 percent in the preceding three-month period.

Overall, there were around 476,200 unemployed persons in Hungary at the end of April, which was notably lower than 508,700 recorded at the end of March, data showed.

In a separate release, the agency said the number persons in employment increased to around 3.87 million in the quarter ended April 2013 from about 3.82 million in the preceding three-month period. The employment rate was 50.7 percent, higher than 50 percent seen in the January-March period.
