Healthcare products major Novartis International AG, (NVS), said that its pivotal late-stage trial, BOLERO-3 (Breast cancer trials of OraLEveROlimus-3) met the primary endpoint.
The findings from the study showed that adding everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, to trastuzumab and vinorelbine significantly extended progression-free survival or PFS when compared to treatment with placebo plus trastuzumab and vinorelbine. The treatment regimen included Afinitor (everolimus) tablets in women with receptor-2 positive (HER2 positive) advanced breast cancer who received prior taxane therapy and whose disease is resistant to prior trastuzumab (Herceptin treatment).
