Hungary April Trade Surplus Exceeds Expectations

Hungary's merchandise trade surplus increased from last year in April, and exceeded economists' expectations, latest data showed Friday.

The trade surplus increased to EUR 700.5 million in April from EUR 433.9 million a year earlier, preliminary estimates from the Central Statistical Office showed. Economists were looking for a much lower balance of EUR 523 million.

Merchandise exports climbed 11.6 percent annually to EUR 6.8 billion in April. Imports advanced 7.8 percent from a year earlier to EUR 6.1 billion during the month.

The share of European Union member states was 76 percent in exports and 71 percent in imports in April, the agency said.

In the January-April period, exports and imports grew by 2.7 percent and 1.6 percent respectively from the same period of 2012, resulting in a trade surplus of EUR 2.44 billion.
