BMW May Sales Rise 6% - Update

German premium car-maker Bayerische Motoren Werke AG or BMW Group (BAMXY.PK, BAMXF.PK, BMW.L) Monday reported 6 percent increase in sales for May 2013, driven by solid double-digit growth in several markets. The Group said it achieved its best-ever May sales result.

Looking ahead, the firm expects further successful months ahead, helped by launch of exceptional new products including BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo on June 15, and newly modified BMW 5 Series in July.

In the month of May, the company sold a total of 166,397 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand vehicles worldwide, higher than 156,954 vehicles sold in the previous year.

BMW brand's worldwide sales in the month climbed 7.8 percent to 139,161 units. Demand for BMW X1 remains strong with 29.3 percent increase in delivery, the company said. BMW 3 Series continued to report healthy gains in May with a 27.5 percent rise in delivery.

Meanwhile, MINI brand delivered 26,955 cars worldwide, down 2.1 percent from the same month last year.

BMW Motorrad sales climbed 14.2 percent to 13,081 vehicles.

Ian Robertson, member of the board of management, sales and marketing BMW, said, "Our vehicle portfolio continues to be in strong demand and once again our sales volume rose to an all-time high last month. We could offset the headwinds in Europe through solid gains in other markets such as the U.S., China, Japan and Russia."

The company said it delivered a total of 770,025 vehicles since the start of the year, the highest sales figures ever for the company in the first five months of the year; and an increase of 5.8 percent from 728,038 vehicles last year. In the first five months, BMW Motorrad sales grew 7.1 percent to 52,400 vehicles.

On Frankfurt's Xetra, BMW shares are currently trading at 72.63 euros, up 0.60 percent, on a volume of 722,135 shares.
