Planet's Oldest Humanbeing Dies At 116

The world's oldest person died in Japan on Wednesday at the age of 116.

Jiroemon Kimura died of natural causes at a hospital in Japan's Kyoto prefecture, where he was admitted with pneumonia.

Born on April 19, 1897, Kimura was recognized by the Guinness World Records in December last as not only the planet's oldest person but also the oldest man in recorded history.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had joined his countrymen in congratulating Kimura on his birthday this year by sending him a video message, which the centenarian watched in bed, nodding and smiling, Japan's NHK broadcaster reported.

Kimura leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren, the broadcaster said.
