Genesee & Wyoming May Traffic Increases

Genesee & Wyoming Inc., (GWR) or G&W, an owner and operator of short line and regional freight railroads, Wednesday reported higher carloads for the month of May.

The company, for comparative purposes, is providing supplemental 2012 carload information on a pro forma basis as though the RailAmerica Inc (RA) railroads were owned by G&W on January 1, 2012.

For the month of May, the company reported total carloads from G&W and RA of 167,527, a surge of 113.3 percent compared with G&W's traffic last May. On a pro forma basis, total carloads were 152,361, a 10 percent increase from last year.

Coal & coke traffic increased 5,712 carloads primarily due to increased shipments in G&W's Midwest, Northeast and Central regions. Petroleum products traffic increased 4,153 carloads primarily due to increased shipments of crude oil and liquid propane gases in G&W's Pacific, Canada, Southern and Mountain West regions. All remaining traffic increased by a net 3,921 carloads, G&W said in a statement.
