Surgeons Repair Baby's Brain Using Superglue

Surgeons at the University of Kansas Medical Center reportedly saved the life of three-month-old baby by using superglue to repair a bleeding aneurysm in her brain. The procedure took place on June 5 and thus far the baby, Ashlyn Julian, is expected to make a full recovery.

Though superglue has been used for several years in medicine, and in fact in brain surgery, it's the first time it's been used on its own and in a child so young.

"It's the first time that superglue has been used to fix a baby who is so young — superglue alone," said surgeon Dr. Koji Ebersole. "We thinned the baby's blood so she would make clots on top of our instruments, but we were going all or nothing at that point and I thought we could get it done."

To get the glue into Ashlyn's brain, the team used a small catheter running through her body into her brain and then implanted a small amount of the acrylic treatment with a tiny wire inserted through the catheter.
