A 16-year-old from Victoria, British Columbia, died when he was hit by a car Sunday during a charity ride in Arlington, Wash., The Vancouver Sun is reporting.
The teen was participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer and was in the final stretch of the event when he was struck and killed.
He was riding along with his mother and uncle and fell off his bike when he tried to pass a group of cyclists.
The teen fell into the path of oncoming traffic and was struck and died at the scene.
"What I've read on certain articles was that he basically was trying to pass... but he was in no way in the wrong," fellow cyclist Shane Devine said.
"He wasn't passing erratically, he wasn't biking erratically."
Efforts were made at the scene to try to revive the teen but they failed.
Police have not released the name of the victim or the driver in the accident.
Cyclists were diverted around the accident scene to an alternative route while police investigate, CBC News is reporting.
