The Taliban has agreed to have direct peace talks with the U.S. over the future of Afghanistan.
UK's The Guardian reports that the Taliban agreed to talks after the U.S. agreed to drop a series of preconditions in regards to the meetings.
The Los Angeles Times reports that talks between officials in the U.S. and Taliban may begin this week in Doha, and that after those talks have taken place, may be followed by a meeting between the Taliban and the High Peace Council in Qatar.
"The core of the process is not going to be U.S.-Taliban talks," said one senior official, who chose to remain anonymous. "The core of it is going to be negotiation among Afghans and the level of trust on both sides is, as one would expect, extremely low."
The announcement was made while President Barack Obama was attending a Group of 8 industrialized nations meeting.
