Sparks flew on Tuesday in the sometimes contentious third and final debate between Massachusetts senate candidates Gabriel Gomez and Ed Markey.
Vying for the seat that was vacated when John Kerry resigned to become Secretary of State, the two candidates traded barbs and accusations on taxes, term limits, abortion and gun control, among others.
The special election is June 25.
Markey, the 37-year-old congressman, leads in the polls against businessman and former Navy SEAL Gomez in a state that traditionally belongs to the Democrats.
Democrats, eager to avoid the stunning Republican senate victory of Scott Brown following the death of Ted Kennedy, have been sending in some big names to campaign for Markey.
President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and former President Bill Clinton have all made visits to the Bay State in support of Markey.
