Hungary's transport minister Pal Szabo and Hungarian Railways (MAV) Chairman Miklos Kamaras have resigned from their posts, accepting responsibility for Monday's passenger train crash that killed four people and injured over 30 others, state news agency reported.
Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcasny accepted both the resignations, but rejected the one tendered by MAV CEO Istvan Heinczinger over the same incident, the report added.
Gyurcasny announced the resignations in a press statement on Monday in the parliament and expressed his sympathy to the families of those killed in the accident and to those injured.
The accident happened near Budapest after an intercity train heading towards the Hungarian capital rammed into the back of a long distance train coming from the eastern city of Nyiregyhaza, MAV said in a statement.
The MAV officials said that the accident occurred outside Monorierdo station and said that it may have been caused by the slowing down of the long-distance train due to the malfunctioning of the signal on the tracks.
Rescue officials said that three people died at the accident site and added that one succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. They also said that three of the injured were in critical condition.
