Spain Repels Migrant Attempt To Storm Border Crossing

Spanish authorities said Monday that the country's security forces have successfully repelled an effort by African migrants to breach the border of Spain's African outpost city of Melilla.

They said that some 150 African migrants armed with sticks and rocks made an attempt to rush the border crossing on Monday, adding that the Spanish forces repelled their efforts successfully by using tear gas.

The authorities said that none of the attackers managed to cross into the Mediterranean city from Morocco and added that two Spanish police officers were injured in the incident.

Every year, thousands of poor Africans seeking a better life attempt to cross over into Spain and Europe. They have already made several attempts to break into Melilla after the recent storms in the region.

Generally, the illegal migrants try to reach Spain by attempting treacherous journeys in overcrowded boats to reach the Spanish mainland or Spain's Canary Islands off the coast of West Africa, and accidents involving illegal African migrants are common off the coast of Spain.
