Former KLA Rebels Remanded To 30 Days In Custody

A court in Belgrade on Monday ordered a one-month detention for 9 former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), who were arrested for suspected involvement in war crimes during the 1999 conflict with Kosovo.

A group of 10 former KLA fighters, all ethnic Albanians, were arrested in the southern Serbian town of Presevo on December 26 for suspected involvement in war crimes in Gnjilane, Kosovo, in 1999.

Nine of the arrested suspects were brought to Belgrade on Monday to face the war crimes panel, while one was being held in Presevo, officials said.

Serbian authorities say that the group is suspected of committing war crimes around Gnjilane in eastern Kosovo after the conflict ended in 1999. The charges pressed against the arrested suspects include rape, torture and murder of at least 51 Serb civilians.
