Woman dies of bird flu in China

Tuesday, China confirmed the death of a young woman infected with the deadly bird flu virus.

China's official Xinhua News Agency quoted the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau as saying that a 19-year-old woman, who has been ailing since December 24, died in the capital Monday.

Huang Yanqing, a native of east China's Fujian Province who lived in Chaoyang District in Beijing, was infected after consuming a duck, the report said.

Health and Municipal authorities in Beijing have started an investigation into the incident.

The Chinese government has reported the case to the World Health Organization (WHO), and health authorities of China's Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions.

This was the first incident of Human bird flu death in China since 2003, the Health Bureau said.

Around 250 people worldwide have died from bird flu since 2003, according to the WHO.
