The European Union on Monday extended its sanctions on Myanmar for another year and urged the country's military regime to release all the detained political prisoners, including opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
A statement released after a meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday said that the European Union "deems it necessary to extend the current EU common position by another year, including the restrictive measures".
However the EU ministers offered to review the sanctions if Myanmar showed signs of democratic progress, saying that the EU "underlines its readiness to revise, amend or reinforce the measures it has already adopted in light of developments on the ground".
The current EU sanctions on Myanmar include a travel ban on Myanmar officials, an arms embargo, a freeze of Myanmar assets and a ban on imports of timber, gemstones and precious metals. The sanctions are in response to the country's military regime's crackdown on pro-democracy groups.
