The film took home a total of three Oscars that night, including Best Supporting Actress for Olympia Dukakis and Best Screenplay for John Patrick Shanley. The film centers on Cher’s character, Loretta Castorini, who is an accountant from Brooklyn. Loretta is newly engaged to Johnny (Danny Aiello) but unexpectedly falls in love with Johnny’s younger brother Ronny (Nicholas Cage).Though the film was a box office smash and the cast received widespread praise, both Cher and Cage nearly missed out. Cher had just completed another film and was unsure that her extravagant real life would allow her to play a believably play a book keeper. Cage was initially passed up by the producers after a weak screen test and Cher threatened to quit unless he was offered the part.
